Van den vos Reynaert

Bij het zien van een indrukwekkende collectie taxidermie in de Verbeke Foundation, was ik gefascineerd door de manier waarop de opgezette dieren werden getoond. Het was geen statische opstelling, maar een theatrale enscenering waarin elk dier een eigen persoonlijkheid leek te bezitten. De curatoren hadden groepen gecreëerd die werkelijk leken te communiceren: sommige vogels in innige gesprekken verwikkeld, andere afzijdig observerend. Je kon de karakters bijna voelen: de stille beschouwer, de luide verteller, de trotse aanvoerder.
Als kunstenaar maak ik autobiografische werken geïnspireerd door mijn reizen en uitstappen, vaak zuiderse reizen. Deze keer was ik in Stekene, in de Verbeke Foundation, dicht bij huis. Toen ik deze taxidermie collectie zag, wist ik onmiddellijk: dit wil ik schilderen. Pas later realiseerde ik me dat er een vos aanwezig was in mijn beeld, een mooi toeval.
Voor deze tentoonstelling schilderde ik zo'n verlichte kast uit de Verbeke Foundation. Verschillende roofdieren en hun prooien bewonen de kast. Enkele duiven vliegen door de lucht. Dit schilderij op (bijna) levensgroot formaat is passend voor het authentieke Kasteel Blauwendael, met haar historische houten vloeren getekend door de patine van de tijd. Er ontstaat een dialoog tussen geënsceneerde dieren uit een ver verleden, die nieuwe verhalen vertellen aan hedendaagse kijkers. Het verhaal van een vos.
Deze groepstentoonstelling en kunstroute bracht je naar 9 uitzonderlijke plekken in Waasmunster: beeldende kunst, fotografie en poëzie. Beeldend kunstenaars en dichters gaven hun interpretatie van Reynaert, de andere dierenfiguren of thema's binnen het verhaal.

Upon seeing an impressive collection of taxidermy at the Verbeke Foundation, I was fascinated by the way the mounted animals were displayed. It was not a static arrangement, but a theatrical staging in which each animal seemed to possess its own personality. The curators had created groups that appeared to be genuinely communicating: some birds engaged in intimate conversations, others observing from a distance. You could almost sense the characters: the quiet contemplator, the loud storyteller, the proud leader.
As an artist, I create autobiographical works inspired by my travels and excursions, often to southern destinations. This time I was in Stekene, at the Verbeke Foundation, close to home. When I saw this taxidermy collection, I knew immediately: this is what I want to paint. Only later did I realise that a fox was present in my image, a happy coincidence.
For this exhibition I painted one of those illuminated cabinets from the Verbeke Foundation. Various predators and their prey inhabit the cabinet. A few pigeons fly through the air. This painting, at near life-size scale, is well suited to the authentic Kasteel Blauwendael, with its historic wooden floors marked by the patina of time. A dialogue emerges between staged animals from a distant past, telling new stories to contemporary viewers. The story of a fox.
